Someone logged one film last week, opened their Year in Review, and was told that their most-watched director of 2026 was Hideo Espinoza and their busiest day was Monday. Both statements were arithmetically true and neither meant anything. They screenshotted it and sent it to us, which is the correct response.
So the recap has a threshold now. Below ten dated diary entries it still shows you your cards — hiding them would be worse, and the shape of the thing is half the fun — but it says plainly how many entries it is working from and how many are left before the numbers are worth believing. Above ten, it stops apologising.
Why ten, and why dated
Ten is not a magic number. It is the smallest number at which "most-watched director" stops being a synonym for "the last director you watched". At four films, two by the same person makes them your obsession. At ten, a repeat is a small signal. At fifty, it is a fact about you. We picked the point where the sentence stops being a lie.
Dated matters more than the count. A rating on its own tells us what you think of a film; it does not tell us that you watched it this year, or on a Tuesday, or three days after the one before it. Everything a recap is actually about — rhythm, seasons, the week in October where you watched six horror films and told nobody — lives in the date. That is why the diary is the product and the rating is a field on it.
A recap that flatters you with numbers it cannot support is not a gift. It is a slot machine with your name on it.
The honest version of a small number
There is a version of this product that shows everyone a triumphant card in January regardless of what they logged, because triumphant cards get posted and posted cards bring people in. We are not going to build that. The whole reason anyone trusts a taste profile is that it was assembled out of things they actually did, one dated line at a time, and the moment it starts rounding up it is worth nothing at all.
The same rule governs the rest of this place, and it is why the community page says eight members instead of eight million. Small and true beats large and invented, and it is not close.
